About

Katherine King, PsyD is a licensed psychologist practicing in Massachusetts. She has advanced specialized training in geropsychology and specific interests in adult development and aging, couples across the lifespan, gender/sexual/relationship diversity, existential concerns, chronic illness adjustment, and health professional burnout recovery. She is a passionate advocate for the well-being of helping professionals and author of The Well Helper: Get Ahead of Burnout, Thrive at Work, and Unlock the Personal Growth Potential of the Helping Professions.

Dr. King treats adults and older adults with a range of presenting concerns including depression, anxiety, trauma, grief, sexual concerns, adjustment and relationship problems. She provides individual therapy, couple/relationships counseling, sex therapy, cognitive and personality assessment, as well as supervision and consultation. She is emphatically LGBTQIA+, kink, and non-monogamy friendly. She is currently a member of APA's Committee on Consensual Non-Monogamy and a senior research scientist with the Community-Academic Consortium for Research on Alternative Sexualities (CARAS).

Dr. King is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Geropsychology Concentration Director in William James College's clinical psychology doctoral program. She teaches Adult CBT, Ethics and Professional Issues, Aging and Mental Health, Grief and Death in Clinical Practice, among others. Prior to joining William James, she developed, chaired, and taught in the Geriatric Mental Health concentration in Cambridge College's graduate School of Psychology and Counseling. She has provided clinical supervision and didactic training to doctoral students at a variety of field training sites.

Dr. King is currently engaged in research on burnout, death anxiety, adultism, sexual configuration theory, and the mental health workforce shortage for older adults. She has completed past projects on childlessness, trauma disclosures by veterans, marital satisfaction among older couples, and the use of creative writing in reminiscence treatment. She has worked and trained in a variety of medical and mental health care settings such as inpatient psychiatry, primary care, palliative and hospice care, skilled nursing, home-based, and elder protective services. She completed her APA-accredited clinical psychology internship at Bedford VAMC and went on to complete a postdoctoral fellowship in geropsychology at VA Boston Healthcare System.

As a past massage therapist and yoga teacher, Dr. King's work is grounded in a healthy respect for the mind-body connection. She has been a practicing Buddhist for over twenty years and maintains a committed daily meditation practice. She is an authorized guide in the Shambhala Buddhist tradition and occasionally teaches meditation at the Boston Shambhala Center, in workshops, as well as when asked by students and clients. She currently co-hosts Noble Mind, a podcast on mindfulness and psychology. In each episode, she and her co-host, Alex Gokce, interview thought leaders such as Steven Hayes, Christopher Germer, Rick Hanson, and Deirdre Fay.

Dr. King is a writer of creative nonfiction and poetry, and is enthusiastic about sharing her love of the arts and literature. She has studied Narrative Medicine at Columbia University and believes that the arts, humanities and health care have much to teach one another. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Bennington College, where she primarily studied visual arts such as photography and printmaking.
